CYBERCABB
Virtual Trip to:

Dec 8-10, 1999

I took a look around, had a shot of whiskey and rode on past da mine
The hot springs were sounded real good by now and it was starting to git late.

Two hours later, after about 5 more miles of riding
up the side of a very steep mountain
I arrived back at the mine.

I had another shot of whiskey.

I had been riding for 6 hours and decided to make camp.
A French baguette, an avocado, some apple butter and cheese
never tasted better.

I gathered wood for about an hour.
There was only brush in the area
so there were no logs. With the high mountains to the west,
it started to get dark around 4:00PM

By 5:00 PM it was dark. Many small planes flew over head. I wondered if they were looking for fires or stranded people. Right about dusk, a low-flying helicopter flew right by me. I stayed real low.

All I could imagine is some heroic ranger who had been informed by one of the planes that there was someone who needed to be rescued down there. If he saw me he probably would have landed to save me from myself. I am sure I would have gotten to learn all the rules of the land and all of the ones I was most likely breaking.... camping without a permit, camping in an unrestricted area, having a fire, burning wood from the area...etc. It is not easy to go through one day in life without breaking some rule devised to protect you from yourself.

In any event, I am sure the cost of a helicopter rescue is pricey. So I stayed real low and outta site. However, had I been stranded out there a second night, I may just have been flagging this guy down.

I put on all my clothes,
and kept occupied with some Jack Keroac.
The wood burned so fast I had to put more on
after each page to have enough light to read.
The temperature dropped to about 34 degrees Fahrenheit.

I had another shot of whiskey.
